With a grant from the UK Government’s technology board, Innovate UK, we’re developing a product to give learners live feedback on their coursework in a range of media, as they produce it.
Web application FormativeAssess will be used in project-based teaching, using data-mining methods in a similar way to social networks that use intelligent advertising to scan user preferences.
FormativeAssess will analyse what learners type to provoke timely intervention in the creative process – in the way a teacher might provide guidance – to direct them towards a better end result. For example, during the initial design phase, learners may be prompted to remember what audience they are designing for or to consider the types of materials they want to use.
Our aim is to exploit the power of cloud computing to support to students, especially in open-ended project work and provide the basis for capturing and nurturing the creative process, rather than getting students to simply tick boxe.
